Thermal Management

Nanoporous surfaces (NPS) improves heat exchanger performance through its ability to generate smaller bubbles. Previously investigated microporous surface (MPS) coatings do allow for the generation of somewhat smaller bubbles than traditional flat surfaces, but offer a limited life span. The proposed NPS nanotechnology, made of traditional boiling surface materials, precisely modulates the porosity and structure of surfaces, thus yielding smaller bubbles with higher bubble density in any given fluid volume.

Phase change materials (PCMs) offer efficient, compact thermal storage through their latent heat of fusion. Novel solid-liquid phase PCMs for thermal management are immobilized in an encapsulating matrix. PCM thermal energy storage (TES) devices can store and dissipate heat in systems where peak thermal loads need to be absorbed quickly.
